Former Miss USA Shares Story of Addiction
It takes a lot of work to hide an addiction. The individual often must lie, manipulate and completely control a situation to ensure his or her secret is kept a secret. According to a recent Behavioral Health Central report, this was exactly the strategy employed by Tara Conner, a former Miss USA.
You could easily assume that winning the Miss USA title would be enough to make an individual happy, yet for Conner, it was only a mask. She describes herself as a rebellious tomboy in a pageant dress who felt so unworthy and unloved that every night she begged in prayer to be put out of her misery, inviting death to come to her door.
As death continued to elude her, she instead sought comfort in drug and alcohol abuse. She remembers that time as being hell; she felt she had no purpose and her life was just a shell. Once a troubled teen, she was proud of herself for accomplishing her Miss USA win, but a drug test exposed her dirty secret and nearly cost her the crown.
It was the first time Conner realized she had become numb, disconnected and emotionless. She decided it was time to get help and in a 30-day drug rehab program, found that he needed honesty and accountability to get her through. An open mind and a willingness to learn helped her get through treatment and once recovered, vowed to help others by sharing her story.
Today, Conner is drug-free and attends several AA meetings every week to stay that way. Each morning, she writes down a gratitude list and shares that her prayers now center on life, not death. She acknowledges that she has to work on herself daily, but keeps her focus on moving forward to keep herself centered and be an inspiration to others.
