Dangerous Pharm Parties Gaining Popularity in Ohio

The vast majority of unintentional drug poisonings come from prescription drugs, which is currently the leading cause of accidental death in Ohio. 10TV’s Jeff Hogan reported that more children are raiding medicine cabinets for prescription drugs and taking them to parties than ever before.

Lane Curry, whose half-brother died of an accidental drug overdose at age 24, explained that kids would bring a bottle of pills, throw them into a bowl, mix them around, and take a handful of pills. These “pharm parties” are incredibly dangerous and are gaining popularity among teens. Curry never attended a pharm party because his mother moved the family to the country, but he knows of them.

“It’s very close to insane,” said pharmacist Ernest Boyd of pharm parties. “It’s like playing Russian roulette with all the chambers loaded.” He added that part of the problem is that kids don’t see it as drug abuse. "They see it as a non-addictive, maybe even safe alternative to what's out there. But the dangers are real, and the level prescription drug abuse has reached in the state of Ohio is staggering."

Dr. Kenneth Hale, who leads an initiative called Generation RX, said that prescription drug abuse is a public health problem and not a medicinal problem. "We've had programs that we're doing at all levels, (kindergarten) through 12 (grade), some college-based programs, things in the community, really to raise awareness about this issue," Hale said.

"Our biggest drug problem in this country is not on the streets, it's in the medicine cabinet," he added.
